Making The Goal-Setting Process a Partnership
MAKING GOALS: Effective and motivational goals engage employees in work they can realistically perform and complete, and which has been shown to be relevant both to the organization and to the employees' interests. MAKE THE GOAL-SETTING PROCESS A PARTNERSHIP: There are four kinds of goals you and your employees should discuss and develop together: 1. Routine. This is an extension of what people are already doing. "Last year you produced 20,000 units; this year, you'll turn out 22,000." "Last period you trained 150 people. This time you'll train 180." "You've been making 15 new business calls per week. You'll up that to 18." There's some challenge, of course, to improving performance over that of the last time period, even if the goals are not particularly new or exciting. 2. Problem solving. Departmental errors are too high. Missed deadlines are too many. The work flow is sluggish. In short, you have problems. Set goals with employees that will identify problems and, hopefully, solve them. 3. Innovative. Your employees have the know-how to suggest new and better ways of doing things. Putting some of your best people to work on innovative goals makes good business sense and is motivating for employees. 4. Personal. What are your employees doing for themselves? What kind of training and education, skills building, or behavioral change could benefit an employee? What steps could the employee take to advance his or her ability and to become more valuable to the organization? Nothing is more important to employees than their personal objectives. Whats the Next Action Step? Nothing gets done unless an action is completed. Everything we do is an action step. Of course some are so routine they don't really need to be written down or remembered. They are simply habit or ingrained in our daily lives. Wake up. Go to the bathroom. Say your prayers. Read the sports section of the newspaper. Take a shower. Brush your teeth. Get dressed. It means that you're willing to take the first step to achieving those goals. When you write down your goals, articulate them on paper, that's the first step to achieving them. Goal Setting - My Disappointing Discovery Goal setting has become almost an industry in itself with countless books and techniques available online and in published form promising to help you achieve your most cherished desires. I have read many articles and looked at many products in the course of keeping up-to-date in my profession. Forget New Years Resolutions -- They Dont Work You can forget about making New Year's Resolutions if you're hoping for a successful outcome. Most aren't worth the paper they're written on. Setting Goals and Obtaining Results GOALS SHOULD BE QUANTIFIABLE: It should be possible to analyze every goal in terms of specific quantifiable objectives. Naturally, for certain tasks, measurement of objectives will be more difficult to attain; the key is to make every effort to reduce each goal to its most quantifiable form. For example, a customer service department might have the following general goals: 1. To increase output on customer acknowledgments. 2. To boost the number of customer telephone inquiries that are handled. 3. To distribute mail in a timely manner. As described, the above goals are completely immeasurable. It is almost certain that the manager's expectations will not be met. The solution: Quantify these goals in a realistic, feasible fashion that will also insure departmental productivity: 1. To type 10 customer acknowledgment letters per hour. 2. Handle a minimum of 15 telephone customer inquiries per each two hour shift. 3. Open, sort, and distribute all mail for the third floor before 10 a.m. each working day. Mission Control had sent more commands than the crew could cope with. Commander General Carr put a stop to this when he radioed in to Mission Control. "You have given us too much to do," he complained. "We're not going to do a thing until you get your act in better order." Prosperity, Step-by-Step Some may think that the change from paucity or 'the norm' to abundant prosperity is a mysterious and miraculous leap brought on by fate or fortune. It is not. Time is precious; you don't want to waste it moving toward a goal that you will never be able to realize. So, how can you quickly evaluate the attainability of your goal? Ask your-self these four questions: Is that W-A-L-R-U-S? A few years back, I went to London, England. I needed to get a passport-like photo taken, but the machine I wanted to use was out of order. When I called the company who owned the machine, I asked where they had another location. I was told, "Walrus." "Walrus?" I confirmed. "Walrus," was the response. I should have asked for the spelling, but the person had said, "Walrus." I asked around, and no one knew where there was a "Walrus" until, that is, someone realized that "Walrus" was "Woolworth's." Apparently, the person I spoke with and I both thought we were saying the same thing ? but boy, were we not! Mission Statements Improve Goal Setting and Decision Making A Mission Statement consists of a short phrase or a few sentences that form an overview of your core priorities and guiding principles. It describes what you are trying to accomplish and what you value. It forms the basis for all of your long-term planning and outlines the overall direction of where and what you would like to be. Writing personal Mission Statements gives you the opportunity to establish what's really important and to make decisions to stick to before you even start setting goals. They allow you to connect with your own unique purpose and help improve your Goal Setting, Time Management, and decision making processes. News Daily, along with Steve Kmetko, had a golden opportunity to be the first one to host E!'s "Wild On" adventure series. The series was originally titled "Sex on the Riviera." When Eleanor Mondale left the show, Jules filled in and ended up hosting "Wild On" for a year and a half. The "Wild On" series takes viewers around the world and shows them that there are OTHER extremely wild people besides Americans doing extremely wild stuff. Yes, Brooke Burke DID have a predecessor. Although in an interview, Jules mentioned that she was reluctant to host the "Wild On" adventure series. She wasn't sure if she wanted to put herself through the dangerous demands of para-sailing, for instance. By the way, her para-sailing adventure was one of her scariest moments. Apparently, Jules was terrified, and rightly so, when the wind kicked up more than usual and Jules was drifting in the air more than what was planned. It also didn't help matters that the producers took their time bringing her down. Physically, she ended up fine, but her anxiety was obvious because of the expletives were bleeped out and by watching what she was experiencing.
